World War II

The United States and the Marshall Islands first became allies during World War II. Many Marshallese served as scouts helping U.S. troops plan strategic attacks on Japanese forces. After bloody battles on Enewetak, Majuro, Mili, Kwajelan and Wotje Atolls in 1944, at a cost of more than 3,000 American casualties and more than 11,000 Japanese casualties, the United States Navy took command of the Marshall Islands.

1944. A U.S. marine supplies water to a small group of Marshallese survivors of a battle on Parry Island, Enewetak Atoll.
In 1947, the U.N. placed the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands into the care of the U.S. Government. Among other responsibilities, the United States was to protect the health of the inhabitants and promote their economic and educational development.
